For the 3rd Strange Vice screening we bring you a punk double bill featuring
Smithereens (1982) directed by Susan Seidelman, from a 16mm print
Before she directed Desperately Seeking Susan, Susan Seidelman made its cooler , tougher , meaner big sister. Smithereens, (actually THE Smithereens for all you pedants out there) . Fresh from New Jersey , Punk Rock wannabe Wren takes a big wormy bite of the Big Apple. Dig her prototypical - Karen O style wardrobe , and marvel at what a self-obsessed little fuck our heroine truly is.
Colourful NY characters and celebrity cameo appearances abound. Richard Hell gets his meatiest film role as semi-famous musician and heal who's bandwagon Wren is determined to barge her way onto. Susan Berman as Wren does a great job of actually making us give a damn about what happens to Little Miss Hard - To- Like. Camera is by Chirine El Khadem , who also shot Amos Poe's new New Wave thriller, The Foreigner .Seidelman gives us a master-class in on location guerilla film-making , getting straight in there with a skin tight opening sequence and soundtrack featuring The Feelies. As if this this wasn't cool enough we shall be showing this from an original 16mm print.
David Markey melds Beyond the Valley of the Dolls into a thinly veiled Runnaways biopic and makes Exploitation cinema history. A masterpiece of low budget film-making , trashy in all the right places but with production values just high enough for an audience to be able to make sense of what's happening . Feast your eyes upon post a Manson murders LA where a washed up strung out Cherie Currie is your waitress.
For those of you unfamiliar with David Markey. He is the man behind We Got Power Films , a real punk-film legend who has been plugging away doing his thing since he was a pup, shooting his first feature at the age of 15 then making The Slog Movie, now seen as one of the definitive documentaries on the 1982 So-Cal Hardcore scene ranking alongside the likes of Penelope Spheeris's, The Decline of Western Civilisation. Among the famous faces that appear in Desperate Teenage Lovedolls are Dez Cadena (Black Flag), Steven and Jeffrey McDonald (Redd Kross) and features a great soundtrack by Redd Kross, Black Flag, the Bags, White Flag... need we go on?
Yes you can get Marky's films from Strange Vice - including the Reinactors, his amazing documentary on the strange subculture of celebrity look-a-likes who roam Hollywood Boulevard.
