This murky twisted noir set in the world of newspaper men where Fuller himself first cut his teeth as a story teller. Interestingly it was written after Fuller had enjoyed some success selling his scripts to Hollywood (the movie rights were bought by Howard Hawkes).

He masterfully keeps this convoluted tale of disaster and betrayal moving through twin narratives, one from the point of view of the investigator the other from that of the killer, demonstrating all the story telling skills that would make him one of Hollywood's greatest writing talents. As we follow the “hard boiled” hero through the streets and bars of New York's seamier side in pursuit of a truth that will give the lie to the cynicism that he wears as a badge of honour. In noir fiction no-one is safe.

This is one of two releases from Kingly Reprieve of novels by revered film writers, the other being Val Lewton's , No Bed of Her Own. The forward to this one is by Wim Wenders.
