In order to survive on the rough streets of Hamburg, 18-year-old Willi gets by with small-time racketeering. After an arrest, the authorities decide to send him to a reformatory, but he escapes from police custody and falls into the clutches of a pimp who sends him to the gay sex trade. At the same time, Willi meets a journalist, who draws him into hopeless re-socialization projects, primarily to improve his own life. When Willi falls in love with a girl who seems to be even worse off than he is, he sets his mind on freeing her from her dreariness and running away with her. But the accumulated problems are so great that his past catches up with him in a dramatic way...
