Bernd is an actor at the St. Pauli Theater in Hamburg, and so far only a supporting actor. His greatest wish: to finally play a leading role. The artistic director offers him "The Gasman," a toxic play about two SS men who pick up their victims at their front doors and exterminate them in a mobile gas chamber. The role turns into a nightmare.
Director Frank, usually in film, is a brilliant despot who stages perpetrators and victims separately; his co-star Mathis is a servile overachiever; and the perfidious play is repugnant to Bernd anyway. Things aren't going well for Bernd in other ways either.
He sees his son far too rarely, and his ex-wife is siccing the bailiff on him. The only two bright spots are his mysterious girlfriend and a bizarre literary circle consisting of five characters who can't get a foothold themselves, but regularly discuss baroque texts in their local pub and meet once a year in a cabin in the woods.
But in this very place, all order is lost in an instant.
