Steve Nolan’s moody synth soundtrack to new movie ‘Advent’ marks another return to the label Spun Out Of Control
With its beautiful piano motifs and moody synth orchestrations conjuring up an imaginary collaboration between Peter Greenaway collaborator Michael Nyman and the late Angelo Badalamenti of Twin Peaks fame, Irish composer Steve Nolan’s latest album on Spun Out Of Control is the full score to new film drama Advent from Rich Waters, director of previous soundtrack release Bring Out The Fear.
In Advent, a famed writer comes home to an Irish castle to complete his long overdue second novel, but is plagued by a rogues’ gallery of local villagers who refuse to leave him alone. As time passes and he struggles to finish his book, their intrusions become increasingly disruptive and eventually, more sinister.
Steve Nolan’s compositions and performance skilfully blends dark synth tones with recurrent piano riffs, creatively reflecting the shifts in tone of the movie itself. Via the standalone soundtrack, the listener is transported to a world where nothing is quite as it seems, with musical twists and turns aplenty before we arrive at an epic and dramatic closing theme.
The physical and digital artwork for Advent is by label regular Eric Adrian Lee, with specially mastered audio for cassette & digital release by Antony Ryan. Catalogue number: SOS 063
