In the 19th century, at the height of the Rattanskosin Dynasty, the people of Thailand face what seems like never-ending war. Pee Mak, a veteran of the war, returns home with four comrades-turned-friends, excited to introduce them to his wife Nak and their newborn child. What seems slightly off, becomes all the more apparent as Mak’s friends begin noticing Nak’s alarmingly ghoulish behavior.

Based off a famous Thai folk tale, PEE MAK uses its story’s lore as a jumping-off point, expertly blending laughs and scares in equal measure. It was so well-received upon it’s debut that it became the highest grossing domestic film in Thailand’s history. It’s one of prolific director Banjong Pisanthanakun’s crowning achievements in Thai cinema, alongside his now-classic SHUTTER & more recently, THE MEDIUM.
