£16.00
Strange Vice will have a selection of Ozploitation films for sale at this event.
Tickets available here.
Presented
by Reel Spirit - a collaboration between Reel Steel and the Spirit of
Independence Film Festival - this feature double-bill celebrating independent
cult cinema highlights the 'Ozploitation' genre, with a pair of films directed
by legendary cult film-maker Brian Trenchard-Smith.
Dead-End Drive-In (1986) shows us a
dystopian near-future, where the economy has crumbled and the authorities have
turned drive-in movie theatres into prison camps.
Existing as a microcosm of society, reflecting issues of unemployment, the
state and division between communities, Dead-End
Drive-In packs a pertinent social narrative alongside explosive action set
pieces, in the movie theatre where the price of admission is your life.
The Man from Hong Kong (1975) stars
Jimmy Wang Yu (star of classic kung-fu cinema, including Master of the Flying Guillotine) as a Hong Kong detective who
travels to Sydney on an international investigation into drug trafficking,
stopping at nothing through an unfamiliar land to bring down a criminal kingpin
(played by George Lazenby - James Bond in On
Her Majesty's Secret Service).
Featuring extraordinary car chases, thrilling fight choreography and dangerous
stunts, The Man from Hong Kong is a
true Ozploitation classic.
Part of the 'new wave' of exploitation films in Australian cinema popularised
in the 1970s and 80s - particularly around films such as 1979's Mad Max - often low-budget, high-octane
and anti-authoritarian, these films showed the spirit of independent film-making
while going on to achieve a cult status.
A double-bill presenting audiences with an introduction to this lesser-known
genre in cinema.
This screening will have a very special in-person introduction and Q&A with
director Brian Trenchard-Smith.
With a career spanning over four decades, and a multitude of cult movie
favourites to his name - including BMX
Bandits, Night of the Demons II,
and Leprechaun 3 - Brian is known for
large-scale movies on small-scale budgets, with Quentin Tarantino naming him as
his "favourite obscure director".
6:30pm – Director introduction.
6:45pm - Dead-End Drive-In.
- interval -
8:30pm – Interview + Q&A with director.
9pm - The Man from Hong Kong.
