Director Sam Newfield is one of the most prolific filmmakers to ever crank out a picture. In his four-decade career, he made 270+ features and was known for being fast, efficient, and little else. Beyond some nostalgia for the handful of horror films he directed, most cinephiles have deemed his output completely disposable. Like Scorsese said: “You can’t do too much of that”
But what if we tried?
Gold Ninja Video is proud to present a disc dedicated to the career of Sam Newfield, a filmmaker that history has tossed in the gutter, but we think deserves a deep dive. Beyond Newfield’s spin on The Wolfman THE MAD MONSTER, this disc includes an exploration of Newfield’s “Good Movies”, a discussion about how one becomes obsessed with a director, and the taunt-little Sam Newfield noir MONEY CRAZY.
ABOUT THE TRANSFERS
The Important Cinema Club Bargain-Bin Classics series is dedicated to preserving and celebrating classic cinema the way it was meant to be seen: in the bad, dupey prints that were prevalent in VHS and DVD bargain-bins in the early 2000s. The producers of this edition scoured out-of-print bargain-basement DVDs dating from the early 2000s to find just the right transfers: clear enough to be legible but damaged enough to look like a local TV broadcast from the ‘60s.
